Joshua Beasley loves shows like America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. And while watching them he always thought, “I could do that.”

Now, as part of a YouTube reality fashion show, he has learned it’s not as easy as it seems. Beasley is competing on Beauty Vlogger Boot Camp, which is being shown on the u look haute YouTube channel

“Now, being on the other side of things, I realize how hard it is,” said Beasley of his experience.

The show stars Elle and Blaire Folwer. Stars in the fashion vlogging – or video blogging — world, the two sisters are searching for the next big fashion vlogger.

Beasley, who graduated from Rosemount High School in 2005, is one of 10 contestants. The show launched on April 3. The winner will take home a cash prize and their own series on u look haute.

Beasley tried out for the show on a whim. A friend sent him the casting call and he thought he might as well try. He submitted a video and was chosen to compete on the show.

Beasley works with make-up for Nordstroms. Last year he graduated with a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Beasley is a bit of a wanderer. After graduating from RHS he went to the University of Central Florida to study forensic science. After getting a modeling job, Beasley moved to New York to try his hand at more modeling. It didn’t work out, but he enjoyed living in the big city. His time in New York cemented his love of fashion.

New York is expensive, though, so he moved home for a while. During his time at home he attended a college fair and saw a booth for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing. He knew right away that was his future, and he started making plans to move to LA.

Determined to be done with school, Beasley finished his school work in a year and a half.

“I crash coursed through. I took six or seven classes a semester. I had no life for a few years,” said Beasley.

The hard work paid off, though, and he graduated in June 2011. That December he landed a job as the manager of makeup counters at Nordstrom’s. Beasley said he loves his job.

“It’s been so much fun. I get to go to work and play with makeup all day,” said Beasley.

Although he likes his job, Beasley has aspirations, too. While he had never considered hosting, his experience on the show has inspired him to start his own YouTube channel. Currently he updates the channel with commentary on the show, but he plans to do more with it.

So far four episodes of Beauty Vlogger Boot Camp have been posted, and Beasley is still competing. He was one of the bottom two on this week’s episode. Whether he stays or goes will be revealed May 1.

The experience has been more than Beasley expected. For one, he has fans, which has taken some getting used to.

“I even have a super fan that comments on everything,” said Beasley.

Of course, he has fans here in Minnesota, too. Especially his parents. Beasley said he’s grateful for all the support and encouraged people to watch the show.
