Imagination carries Rosemount students to state
Six local Destination ImagiNation teams will compete in this weekend’s state tournamentBy: Nathan Hansen, Rosemount Town Pages
Rosemount schools will be well represented this weekend at the state finals of Destination ImagiNation competition.
The worldwide academic competition asks students to take on a variety of tasks, depending on the category in which they choose to compete. Students are judged on what they prepare for the competition as well as on an instant challenge that is not revealed until the day of the competition.
Each team has a parent or teacher who serves as manager and coach, but students must do all of the work themselves.
Top teams at this weekend’s state competition will advance to the DI global finals in May. Global finals are held in Knoxville, Tenn.
Four of six teams at Shannon Park Elementary School qualified for state at regional competition in March. It’s the most teams the school has ever qualified.
Rosemount Middle School will send two of its three teams to the state competition. A team of sixth graders who call themselves the Periwinkle Fluffy Squids qualified in March in the Coming Attractions category, which asks students to prepare and perform a live-action movie trailer that features a special effect and an original soundtrack. Team TGIDI, which last year won a global title, will compete in the projectOUTREACH category, which asks students to take on a cause. The students held a swim marathon fundraiser earlier this year that brought in more than $10,000 for muscular dystrophy research.
ProjectOUTREACH teams do not compete at the regional level.
