As interest in eating healthfully has grown, so has an interest in gardening. But what do you do when you don’t have much space?

John Zweber says square-foot gardening is the way to go, and he can teach you how to do it.

Zweber will present Square Foot Gardening at 10:30 a.m. March 17 at the Robert Trail Library.

During the two-hour presentation, Zweber, owner of Easy Gardens by John, will demonstrate how to build 4x4 container garden. He will cover how to choose the amount and kinds of plants that do well in such a garden. He will talk about proper care and harvest. And he will make suggestion on where to locate garden to get the best yields.

“I’ll talk about the basics of square foot gardening,” said Zweber.

According to the University of Minnesota Extension gardening is a good hobby. It not only provides healthful food but also exercise. Planting a vegetable garden is not hard, but without careful planning and proper follow through, a garden may perform poorly.

For those who want a garden, Zweber said square foot gardening is an easy and space efficient way to grow vegetables. Plus, he said, it is fun. At the presentation, Zweber will have several containers, some with plants, to serve as examples.

In addition to showing how to build a container, Zweber said the class is a good tutorial on growing vegetables. The class is open to people of all ages. Zweber said it will be good for everyone from beginners to seasoned gardeners.

Zweber, a Rosemount resident and Dakota County Master Gardener, has taught similar classes for several years. He said they are generally well attended and he enjoys teaching about the topic.

Zweber will teach a similar class through School District 196 Community Education. For information visit district196.org/ce or call 651-423-7920.
