This year’s senior class is certainly one worth celebrating.
Jake Stern, Conor Manning, Braden McCormack, Matthew McCormack, Tyler Lawson, Luke Dowell, Nick Jeffrey, Jim Peterson and Alex Luing have helped the Rosemount swimming and diving program capture numerous school records and conference, section and state honors over the last four years. The group celebrated its Senior Night Friday by continuing its four-year run of perfection in the South Suburban Conference with a 96-82 victory over Eastview at Rosemount Middle School.
“The seniors definitely went out on a good note. They have all done an amazing job in their swimming careers,” Rosemount coach Patti Wegner said. “They are great mentors in the pool, the weight room and in school.… They should be proud of all they have accomplished.”
The group can close out its fourth straight unbeaten conference season tomorrow night when the Irish take on Prior Lake at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Twelve days after that, the Irish will return to Hidden Oaks as they gun for a fourth straight section title.
The Irish started the meet against Eastview by winning the first eight events. The four members of the team’s standout 200 medley relay team were shuffled into two separate groups in the opening event, and the two Rosemount teams claimed the top two spots, reaching the finish less than a second apart.
Andrew Urness followed with first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Sheldon Hatlen won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.
Jeffrey (50 freestyle), Peterson (1-meter dive) and Cody Sedbrook (500 freestyle) added first-place finishes during the streak.
The meet went to exhibition scoring for the final three events, all won by the Irish. Braden McCormack and Jeffrey placed 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, Stern won the 100 breaststroke and Rosemount teams finished 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Other runner-up finishers were Sam Kendall in the 200 freestyle, Stern in the 100 butterfly, Dowell in the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.
