Seven of Rosemount’s 13 wrestlers reached the finals Saturday afternoon as the Irish cruised to the team title at the Kenyon-Wanamingo Dave Mauseth Invitational.
The Irish crowed three tournament champions — Dan Rosa, Adam Jackson and Sam Moeller — as they racked up 197 1/2 points and outscored runner-up Kenyon-Wanamingo by 44 1/2 points. Stillwater Area (141), Medford (139), Faribault (136), Cannon Falls/Randolph (123), Burnsville (121), Triton (86), Northfield (82) and Blooming Prairie (39) rounded out the 10-team tournament.
“We had a great day. It was an overall team effort. We’d like to wrestle like that every time we go out. That’s the goal,” Rosemount coach Brett Larson said. “It was a tough tournament with lots of very good individuals, including three state champions from other schools.”
All three of Rosemount’s individual champions advanced through their brackets without much trouble. At 113 pounds, Rosa used a 9-2 decision and two pins to advance to the finals before winning, 5-3 over the second-ranked 113-pounder in Class 1A. Jackson won thanks to a pin, a 21-6 technical fall and an injury default and Mueller won his first-ever individual tournament thanks to a bye and a pair of decisions at 170 pounds.
Four other Irish wrestlers — Adam Hedin at 120 pounds, Steve Levine at 132, Pat Massey at 152 and Stefan Sauer at heavyweight — earned second-place finishes.
Larson said his team stepped up at Kenyon after failing to wrestle to its capabilities at several weights in Thursday’s 35-27 South Suburban Conference win over Burnsville.
“It was good to get that victory. It showed we’re a solid, balanced team from 106 through heavyweight that we won even though we didn’t wrestle well,” he said. “We came back from that and wrestled awesome on Saturday.”
The Irish took on Eagan and Park of Cottage Grove in a double dual Wednesday night in Eagan. They compete again at the Rumble on the Red next week in Fargo.
