Richard Marquardt, the Rosemount man charged with shooting a series of explicit photos and videos of an underage girl, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Marquardt, 36, pleaded guilty in October to five felony offenses in connection with the images, which he shot over four years starting when the girl was 4.
Police never alleged that Marquardt had sexual contact with the girl, but they found several files on his computer, labeled with the girl’s name and her age. Some of the photos and videos showed the girl unclothed. Others showed her wearing – and soiling – a diaper. Some were shot in Marquardt’s home, and others in public places, including the Minnesota Zoo.
In several videos, the girl complains of discomfort related to a need to go to the bathroom, then soils the diaper or her clothing as Marquardt films. The girl told a social worker at the time that Marquardt would sometimes refuse to let her go to the bathroom.
In some cases, Marquardt’s own children can be heard in the background of the video.
Police started investigating Marquardt after the girl’s mother approached them in January to report suspicions. The girl was a frequent overnight visitor at Marquardt’s home.
When police searched Marquardt’s home they found it cluttered with toys, discarded food and mouse droppings. According to documents filed in the Dakota County Attorney’s office the home also smelled of urine.
In a Feb. 1 meeting Marquardt told police he was aroused by diapers. He said he had been downloading images of children from the Internet for 10 to 15 years, and said he recorded the girl – and in some cases uploaded the photos and videos to online sites – because he thought she was “cute.”
Marquardt’s computer also contained images of him wearing a diaper.
Marquardt will receive credit for 306 days already served in jail. He will be required to serve at least eight years of his sentence in prison before he is eligible for release. He must also register as a predatory offender and pay for counseling for the victim.
