Girl will compete for Miss Teen crown
Brooklyn Hanson hopes pageant will help her get comfortable speaking in front of a crowdBy: Emily Zimmer, Rosemount Town Pages
In August Brooklyn Hanson’s cousin got a letter from Future Productions for the Miss Teen USA competition. Brooklyn’s cousin wasn’t interested, but Brooklyn was.
“I thought it would be cool,” said Brooklyn.
The 13-year-old Rosemount resident decided to sign up and give it a try. On Nov. 26 she will compete against dozens of other girls from around the state to become Miss Minnesota Teen USA.
While she’s never done anything like it, Brooklyn said she feels as though the experience will be good for her. The aspiring actress said learning to speak in front of a crowd and the possibility of winning scholarships attracted her to the competition.
Brooklyn’s mom, Stephanie Hanson, said she was surprised her daughter wanted to take part in the competition.
“I couldn’t believe she put herself out there like that,” said Stephanie.
To compete, Brooklyn had to raise nearly $900. Through the fundraising effort Stephanie said Brooklyn showed her level of commitment.
“She fundraised all the money herself,” said Stephanie.
Through the process Stephanie said she’s been amazed at how supportive the community has been.
“Everybody is excited for her. It has really made us feel like we are part of a community. It’s been neat to see people join together for her,” said Stephanie.
As part of the competition Brooklyn will take part in three categories: evening gown, swim suit and personal interview. Stephanie said the company that puts on the show has encouraged the girls to be natural. Additionally, Stephanie said Brooklyn is learning valuable life skills such as public speaking.
Brooklyn said she’s been working hard to be ready, including learning how to walk in heels. Excited and a little bit nervous, Brooklyn said she’s looking forward to competing.
The Miss Minnesota Teen USA competition will be held Nov. 26 and 27 at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center. For ticket information visit futureproductions.com.
