Next week we celebrate Thanksgiving, a celebration that has been held since 1621 when colonists of Plymouth and members of the Wampanoag Indians gathered to share food and give thanks for survival after so many perished during that first harsh winter.
Today family and friends still gather to share food and give thanks for their blessings. On what once was the day of "Over the River and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go," we find families separated by miles who for many reasons can't return home to celebrate together. As families grow, celebrations change to include in laws and their special foods and traditions.
For some it maybe an opportunity to share memories and traditions with new friends as they gather to watch football and feast on turkey, gravy, dressing, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Other families may break from the traditional turkey dinner by serving ham, prime rib or a roast.
It's a time when we remember those comfort foods. Thanksgiving remains one of the biggest food days of the year. Cooks anticipate the meal with excitement and fear.
Many families who are hosting the day delegate what others can bring, including appetizers, salads, side dishes and desserts. Family members have special recipes they enjoy preparing.
As you gather with family and friends remember to give thanks for all the blessings we have and to share memories. It's one day when we can sit back and relax before we get into the cold snowy winter days and the busy schedules of the holidays.
If you are traveling next weekend, allow a little extra time. Remember don't drink and drive.

1 bag fresh cranberries
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup orange juice
@bodycopy:Place all ingredients in pan and bring to boil. Stir constantly until all the berries have popped. Remove from heat and add more sugar if a sweeter sauce is preferred. Refrigerate until serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
