Summer reading program kicks off next week

Beginning June 13, kids age 12 and younger can sign up for the Bookawocky Summer Reading Program at any Dakota County Library branch. Kids who sign up get a reading record to keep track of the time they read or are read to. Small prizes are awarded to participants after 10 and 20 hours of reading.

Kids and teens can have fun at the library this summer with Bookawocky, a celebration of summer reading. From June 13 through Aug. 13, kids and teens can read books for prizes and have the opportunity to attend more than 200 free programs and special events.

Beginning June 13, kids age 12 and younger can sign up for the Bookawocky Summer Reading Program at any Dakota County Library branch. Kids who sign up get a reading record to keep track of the time they read or are read to. Small prizes are awarded to participants after 10 and 20 hours of reading. Kids age 2 and older can complete a game card of 12 literacy-related activities to be entered into a drawing for a Nintendo DS Lite.

Teens, age 12 to 18, can sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program. When signing up, they’ll receive one free ticket to a special teen event at Cascade Bay Waterpark and one free ticket to the Dakota County Fair, featuring the Grand Battle of the Bands. Teens are also eligible to win books, gift cards, Valleyfair tickets or the grand prize of a Nook eReader by entering book reviews or attending programs. They’ll also have a chance to meet five nationally-known young adult authors: Tamora Pierce, M.T. Anderson, Laurie Stolarz, Swati Avasthi and Maggie Stiefvater.
