Despite being the lower seed and losing to Burnsville earlier in the regular season, the Rosemount boys tennis team felt good about its chances in the Class 2A, Section 3 team tournament last week.
The Irish were named the No. 9 seed for the team tournament and had to travel to No. 8 seed Burnsville. The Blaze beat Rosemount 5-2 in April, but Irish coach Dana Beck felt her team had improved since then.
Rosemount knew it wouldn’t be easy. The Irish lost 6-1 to Burnsville in the opening round of the team section tournament.
“It was a disappointment for us not to get through the first round of sections, but we knew we had a tough match going into the first round,” Beck said. “We were hoping that we could pull out a few more wins and give them a competitive match down to the wire, but it just wasn’t our day.”
The Irish still have a chance to compete this season, with the individual section tournament starting tomorrow at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.
Matt Baker and Will Holcomb will team up in doubles play for the section tournament and were named the No. 6 seed in the doubles bracket. Sean and Stuart Hatlen will also play doubles.
Dominic Olhoff and Blake Sowokinos will play in the singles bracket.
Grayson Freking and Connor McGahn supplied Rosemount’s lone point last week against Burnsville. The duo combined for a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Blake and Matt Sowokinos lost 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 at third doubles. Stuart Hatlen and Matt Stefanko lost 1-6, 4-6 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Baker lost 6-0, 6-1 at first singles. Holcomb lost 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles.
Sean Hatlen lost 6-3, 6-2 at third singles, while Olhoff lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
