Senior Dominic Olhoff has spent much of his time in the doubles lineups for the Rosemount boys tennis team this season.
As Irish coach Dana Beck has experimented to come up with the best possible doubles pairings, Olhoff’s playing time and spot have been inconsistent.
But there was Olhoff last week in the spotlight against Apple Valley.
Rosemount and the Eagles were tied 3-3 with Olhoff playing in the lone remaining match at No. 4 singles. The Irish haven’t beaten Apple Valley in several years.
Olhoff ended the drought against the Eagles and he might have carved himself out a regular spot in the lineup.
Rosemount pulled out the 4-3 team victory with Olhoff rallying several times to win 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at fourth singles. Olhoff was down one set and trailed 5-2 in the second set before recovering. With everyone around watching the final match of the evening, Olhoff was down 4-2 in the third set before again rallying.
“I am very proud of Dominic as he really stepped up and never gave up,” Beck said. “He came into the match to play in a new position, No. 4 singles, and he stayed mentally tough and focused, especially with both teams’ and fans’ eyes glued to every point for the last two sets.”
The Irish pulled out two doubles wins. Matt Stefanko and Sean Hatlen won 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at first doubles.
Will Holcomb won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Rosemount (7-2, 4-2 South Suburban) entered the week with five straight victories.
“We look forward to our last three conference matches,” Beck said. “The team has really come together and I feel like we definitely can compete with the top teams in our conference.”
