Rosemount gymnastics coach Jason Passeri didn’t need any further confirmation of his squad’s true depth this season, but last week’s meet against Apple Valley offers to show others how the Irish is able to wins meets this season.
While Rosemount develops its young squad, it often faces teams with more established varsity scorers. Despite their inexperience, the Irish are getting by on their depth as they record a 6-0 mark in the South Suburban Conference.
Last week’s meet against Apple Valley is the perfect example. The Eagles had the top finisher in each event and had the top two all-arounders, but Rosemount won the meet, 136.85-134.7.
“They placed two kids on every event; we placed three,” Passeri said. “After their top two we have five kids that were right up there.”
The depth displayed by the Irish helped overcome any top finishes by Apple Valley.
Rosemount led by just .8 points after the first two events, but really distanced itself in the final two events.
On the vault, Rosemount’s Claire Holtz scored an 8.9 for third place. Jenna Schlukebier was fourth with an 8.7 and Kathy Aune finished fifth with a score of 8.65.
Holtz was second on the uneven bars with an 8.65, while Aune scored 8.225 for fourth place.
“We got another victory in the conference, we keep ending up winning,” Passeri said. “The balance in the team was the difference in this meet.”
With the slim lead, the Irish went to the balance beam and took third and fourth. Abby Nelson took third with a score of 8.8. Kailey Askew placed fourth with an 8.625.
Heading into its final, and probably best, event, Rosemount put away the win with second- and fourth-place finishes.
Aune scored a 9.075 for second place. Schlukebier earned a 9.0 for fourth.
Holtz finished as the Irish’s top all-around performer, scoring 34.425 for third place. Aune was fourth with a total of 34.05. Askew finished fifth in the all-around with a 33.9.
Rosemount finishes the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 8 with a meet against Eastview.
