Rosemount man says U.S. owes him

airplane

A Rosemount man claims that the federal government owes him an airplane.

Charles P. Doyle, a Northwest Airlines pilot, wants a C-45 transport plane in exchange for his P-40 fighter plane of World War II vintage. If he can’t get it, he demands that the government pay him $5,000 plus another $5,000 for loss of use of the C-45.

The charges were made this week in a breach-of-contract law-suit filed by Doyle in Minneapolis federal district court.

His attorney, Mark C. Brennan, Minneapolis, said Doyle had acquired the P-40 plane a few years ago. The plane originally was part of the government’s surplus property sold after the war. Doyle is an aviation enthusiast, Brennan said.

According to William Hunt, assistant U.S. District attorney, Doyle went to the Wright-Patterson air force base museum near Dayton, Ohio, and offered to trade his P-40 for a C-45 there. He even picked out the one he wanted.

Doyle says he entered into a contract with the air force to provide for the exchange. The government claims, Hunt said, that there never was a contract and that Doyle merely had made an offer which was not approved by air force headquarters.
