One week into the filing period for Rosemount’s city council election the races are looking a lot more manageable than they did the last time the council elected new members.

As of Tuesday afternoon only two people had filed for city council and one — incumbent Bill Droste — had filed for mayor.

Droste was first elected in 2002.

In 2008, the last city council election, there were 26 candidates on the ballot. The council voted to implement a primary election this year in case there was another large field. The primary will be held only if there are more than two candidates for each available position.

At the moment, there is only one candidate for each position. The council positions of Mark DeBettignies and Kim Shoe-Corrigan are both up for election. So far the only candidates are Joe Kurle and Malia Ellefson. Ellefson was a candidate in 2008.

Candidates have until June 1 to file an affidavit of candidacy and pay a filing fee at city hall.
