After opening the section tournament with a win, the Rosemount boys hockey team has some things to build on heading into next season.

However, beating a No. 1 seed won’t be one of the building blocks.

The Irish lost 6-0 to top-seed Eagan last week in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A, Section 3 tournament. Rosemount’s season ended with a 3-23 record, with the three wins coming against non-conference opponents.

Coach Scott Macho was pleased with the effort in the opening game of the playoffs, a 3-0 victory against Henry Sibley. Macho credited much of the opening win to a return to health by several players that had missed significant playing time this year.

A season of struggles would offer the Irish no favors during the section tournament though. In the end, a low seed and a match-up with the top seed were too much for Rosemount to overcome.

Eagan — ranked No. 10 in Class 2A — scored once in the first period, but Rosemount would be unable to hold the Wildcats. Eagan scored four times in the second period.

Justin Franks made 25 saves in goal for the Irish.

Rosemount was outshot 31-13 in the loss.
