Most fires at home are preventable. The Rosemount Fire Department this week is out trying to spread that message as part of Fire Prevention Week.
According to the National Fire Protection Agency fire crews around the country responded to more than 400,000 home fires in 2006. Many of those could have been prevented with a little more caution which is why the this year’s them is Prevent Home Fires.
The Rosemount Fire Department’s strategy for spreading that message is to teach the kids first and then educate their parents said Lt. Ed Kropelnicki.
Throughout the week fire crews visited Rosemount elementary schools to teach kids about the dangers of home fires. In addition they invited those kids to an open house Sunday at Fire Station #2.
During the open house, firefighters hope to educate the parents as well.
Fire Station #2 will open to the public for four hours Sunday afternoon. In addition to education the firefighters will have a number of activities including a vehicle extrication demonstration, smoke house trailer, vehicle air bag demonstration, tours of the fire trucks and the chance to squirt a fire hose.
“The boys especially like to squirt the hose,” said Kropelnicki.
Kropelnicki said the department will emphasize the important of carbon monoxide detectors as well. Effective Aug. 1, Minnesota law states that every bedroom in a residence should be equipped with a CO detector. To help promote the use of the detectors, Kropelnicki said they will give away a few of the devices.
“We think it’s a great thing to promote,” he said.
The Rosemount Fire Department takes part in Fire Prevention Week annually. Kropelnicki said it’s a good way to get out in the community and to raise awareness. The department has had good crowds in the past for the open house. He expects the same this year.
The Rosemount Fire Station #2 open house will be held from noon to 3 p.m. The station is located at 2047 Connemara Trail West. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served.
