Compact fluorescent lights use less wattage to provide the same amount of light as conventional bulbs. The fluorescents also typically last longer, but contain small amounts of mercury. It is illegal to dispose of them with garbage.

Users can deposit CFLs in a container at the upper lobby of city hall during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. City crews will deliver collected bulbs to Dakota County Environmental Management, which will recycle them at no additional cost.

The city will only accept compact fluorescent bulbs that fit in the screw-in sockets used by traditional incandescent bulbs. Broken bulbs must be in a sealed plastic bag or container.

The city cannot accept larger fluorescent bulbs. Those bulbs should be taken to the Dakota County Eco-Site in Eagan for recycling. Contact the facility at 651-905-4520 for details.
