Youth commission helps plan Lighting of the Tree event
Start the Holiday season off brightly with the annual Lighting of the Tree event Dec. 1. This year the Rosemount Youth Commission, the Rosemount Business Council and the Rosemount Area Arts Council have partnered to put on the event.
The 2012 Lighting of the Tree will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 in front of the Steeple Center.
"It should be a pretty fun event," said John Drew, a youth commissioner.
Assistant city administrator Emmy Foster said the youth commission was looking for a way to get involved in the community when it was suggested they help plan the Lighting of the Tree event.
Foster said it seemed like a good fit for the group of high school students. The students went to work and the event will include performances by volunteers from the Rosemount High School choir and the RHS brass and drum ensemble.
The Rosemount Business Council partnered to help provide refreshments for the event, including hot apple cider and cookies. Foster said it was a natural partnership and that things have fallen into place.
Of course the big moment of the event will be the lighting of the tree. Drew said Mayor Bill Droste will do the honors.
After the tree lighting Santa will make an appearance. Attendees can bring a camera and have their pictures taken with the jolly old elf.
Council member and liaison to the youth council Jeff Weisensel said the kids on the commission took on the event with enthusiasm and he anticipates their involvement will make it a better event.
Drew said the youth commission members have enjoyed putting the event together and hope to make it a good event for the community.
The event will coincide with the evening performance of RAAC's second annual Christmas at the Steeple Center. Tickets to the show are not required to attend the Lighting of the Tree event.
