Wrestling: Irish tie for third in the South Suburban Conference
The 11th-ranked (Class 2A) Rosemount wrestling team could only win one of what coach Brett Larson viewed as four pivotal matches in last Thursday’s 33-29 South Suburban Conference dual loss at Lakeville North.
“There were four toss-ups and we only got one of them. We needed to win more of those and we came up a little short,” Larson said.
Pins were supplied by Craig Szymanski and Jake Bottem, who filled in and won his first varsity match of the season. Third-ranked 132-pounder Adam Hedin and Grant Jackson won technical falls, ninth-ranked heavyweight Payton Otterdahl scored a major decision and Josh Lorenz earned a decision.
The loss wrapped up a 13-7 dual season for the Irish. They finished 5-3 in the South Suburban, good enough for a tie for third with Eastview, and earned the No. 2 seed in the Section 3AAA tournament, which gets under way tomorrow night at Rosemount High School.
With No. 1-ranked Apple Valley in the field, the goal for the other seven teams is to once again reach the championship and earn second place. The Irish finished second two years ago, but lost to Henry Sibley in the semifinals last year.
“Everybody is fighting for second and everybody knows it,” Larson said. “We came up short last year and we’d like to get back to the finals this year.”
