Wrestling: Irish sweep triangular
The ninth-ranked Rosemount wrestling team faced little resistance in its home triangular Saturday.
The Irish defeated Hopkins 67-0 and then likely secured the No. 2 seed in the section with a 49-21 handling of Henry Sibley.
“Any time you shut someone out you know you had a good day, which we did,” Rosemount coach Brett Larson said.
Third-ranked 132-pounder Adam Hedin, Connor Busho, Kouta Sugii and 10th-ranked 220-pounder Craig Szymanski all won by fall against Hopkins. Diondre Lodge, Reuben Cephas, seventh-ranked Jake Baker, Josh Lorenz, Grant Jackson, Charlie Huynh and ninth-ranked heavyweight Payton Otterdahl also won their matches.
Cephas, Baker, Lodge, Hagen, Hedin, Jackson, Busho, Szymanski and Otterdahl completed 2-0 days with wins against Henry Sibley.
Hedin leads the Irish with a record of 27-3. Baker (22-6), Otterdahl (21-3) and Cephas (21-10) have also reached the 20-win mark and Busho (19-10) and Grant Jackson (19-3) are close behind.
On Friday night the Irish won six matches against third-ranked Prior Lake, but the Lakers pulled away for a 41-23 South Suburban Conference dual win under the spotlight at Irish Gym.
“We wrestled very well. We could have won one more, plus we had two starters out because of injury,” Larson said. “Four of our guys lost to ranked wrestlers, but they didn’t back down and battled.”
Hedin and Jackson won their matches by major decision. Cephas, Baker and Sugii won decisions and Otterdahl won by injury default.
The Irish compete again tonight at Lakeville South.
