Woman dies after hitting ISD 196 bus in Apple Valley
A 78-year-old Eagan woman died Monday afternoon after rear-ending an Independent School District 196 bus at the corner of McAndrews Road and Dover Drive in Apple Valley.
According to Apple Valley police the bus was stopped on McAndrews and waiting to make a left turn onto Dover Drive around 3:20 p.m. when the westbound 1999 Ford Contour hit the bus from behind, then continued into the ditch.
The woman driving the car, identified as Gloria Deane Carlson, died instantly. She was the only person involved in the accident who received any serious injuries.
There were early reports students from Rosemount's St. Joseph School were among the 18 students on the bus. The route is one that carries St. Joseph students, but none of the students on the bus at the time were from the school. All of the students on the bus were from Scott Highlands Middle School. According to the district all of the students were given letters to bring home to their parents explaining what happened and SHMS principal Dan Wilharber spoke to most of the parents Monday night.
Bus driver Bob Gauer, who has worked for the district since 2005, was taken by tranportation coordinator Randy Dukek for drug and alcohol testing, standard procedure in any personal-injury accident involving a school bus. Gauer was not cited by Apple Valley police.
