Week 1: Irish hammer Eastview, 41-6

A big-play offense and stifling defense carried Rosemount to a South Suburban Conference championship and all the way to the Prep Bowl title game a season ago.

Both of those traits looked to be well intact in Thursday night’s season opener at Irish Stadium. Senior quarterback Jackson Erdmann started the scoring with a pair of 40-plus yard touchdown passes, fellow conference Offensive Player of the Year Dimitri Williams scored three touchdowns and the defense held Eastview to 134 total yards in a 41-6 rout of the rival Lightning.

Erdmann found wideout Tyler Hartigan for a 45-yard catch-and-run touchdown on Rosemount’s first possession of the season. The 10-play drive made it 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

The Irish’s next scoring drive took just over two minutes and resulted in a 40-yard scoring strike to Gavin Rudoll.

After a short Eastview punt, the Irish quickly scored again on Williams’ 11-yard sprint across the goal line at the 3:57 mark of the second.

Williams reached the end zone again early in the third, returning the opening kickoff of the second half 92 yards for a touchdown. After another Rosemount defensive stop, Williams completed his hat trick of touchdowns with an 11-yard run to make the score 34-0.

Erdmann added a third touchdown of his own on a 10-yard toss to Noah Link before sitting out the fourth quarter. Erdmann finished 13 for 24 through the air for 180 yards. Five completions went to Rudoll for 64 yards and four went to Hartigan for 68.

The Irish rushed the ball 29 times for 150 yards. The carries were spread out among 11 players as Lowell Green led the team with six rushes for 45 yards.

Alex Trana booted in five extra points for the Irish. Spike Burkard hauled in the team’s lone interception late in the first half.

The Irish (1-0) are back at home Friday night (Sept. 5) against Prior Lake.
