Walk the Streets of Bethlehem Dec. 14-15 at Our Savior
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

The streets of Bethlehem will come to life at Our Savior Lutheran Church Dec. 14 and 15. It's a huge undertaking for the small congregation, but pastor Neil Ristow said it's one of the best things the church does.

"We really enjoy putting it on," said Ristow.

Annually, the congregation puts together the production to share the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The congregation creates the city of Bethlehem at the time of Christ's birth in the Family Life Center. The reenactment includes shepherds and town folk, a bakery and market, a grain mill, pottery shop, carpenter's shop and the stable where the Christ-child was born. The recreation includes the sights, smells and tastes that would have greeted the holy family as they wandered into the little village of Bethlehem.

Ristow said in the last several years they have added a twinkling night sky and live animals to create a more realistic experience.

The event has proven popular and draws hundreds of people a night to the church. Andrea Hinrichs, who is in charge of costumes for the event, said it's fun to see people's reactions, especially those of children, to the Streets of Bethlehem.

In fact, Hinrichs said one of her fondest memories came from the event. Hinrichs said several years ago a little boy came through with his family. As part of the event each kids receives a gold coin. After walking the streets, the boy came out disappointed because he wanted to give his coin to baby Jesus. Hinrichs said she let him go back in and give Jesus the coin.

"He came back so excited that he gave his coin to baby Jesus. That's a special memory for me," said Hinrichs.

Hinrichs said being part of the event is a wonderful experience.

"It's the true meaning of Christmas," said Hinrichs.

The Streets of Bethlehem will be open to the public from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15. The event is free and open to the public.
