Volleyball: Strong at the start
Going into their game against Bloomington Jefferson High School, the Irish volleyball team expected to play well. That’s exactly how it went.
Rosemount beat the Jaguars in three games, 25-12, 25-21, 25-18.
“We had a good first game. We took care of the ball on our side of the net,” said head coach Smokey Vitek.
In the front row, Brittany McLean led the team with 20 kills. Vitek said everybody else played solidly, including those who had to take on a bigger role as the team lost three seniors last season.
This year’s team features four players that earned all-South Suburban honors including McLean, setter Erin Slinde, middle blocker Justine Buckmister and defensive specialist Brittany Morrison.
“Other players stepped up and we have a lot of experience going into this season,” said Vitek.
That experience will be important as the team faces tough conference opponents. Vitek said the South Suburban conference is competitive and that winning consistently will require the team to play at a high level. With a talented lineup, Vitek said she’s confident the Irish will have a strong presence in the conference.
