Volleyball: Irish sweep Faribault
The Rosemount volleyball team picked up its second win in as many tries on the young season with a 3-0 sweep of Faribault Thursday night at Irish Gym.
The Irish, coming off a 3-1 win over a North St. Paul team that went 22-7 a season ago, held on to claim a tight 25-21 win in Game 1. They then pulled away 25-13 and 25-11 in the final two games.
“We started a little slow and tentative, but came on strong in games two and three,” coach Smokey Vitek said. “That was to be expected after the big win on Monday.”
Brittany McLean led the Irish offensive attack with 14 kills. Sarah Jacobs slammed five kills and Bri Glaus and Erin Slinde contributed four apiece.
Slinde also pitched in with 15 set assists and nine digs. Maddie Phyle led the team with 16 assists and Brittany Morrison’s 11 digs paced the defense.
“Our passing was not as strong as it should have been but we managed to work around that with smart hitting and strong defense,” Vitek said.
The Irish hosted New Prague on Tuesday and are back at Irish Gym tonight against Hutchinson. This weekend the team competes in a 16-team tournament at Apple Valley High School.
