Volleyball: Irish finish 10th at Albertville
The Rosemount volleyball team tuned up for section tournament play by competing in its final regular season tournament of the season over the weekend at St. Michael-Albertville.
The Irish won three of five matches Friday and Saturday at the 32-team get-together, defeating Monticello 2-0, Anoka 2-0 and St. Michael-Albertville 2-1 to place 10th.
“This is a great tournament with a strong field of teams. The other thing I like is that we see many teams that we do not get to play and see south of the city,” Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek said. “We played well for most of the tournament. It was a good opportunity for us to refine some of our strategies.”
Brittany McLean earned all-tournament team honors for the Irish. She had 64 kills over the five matches.
“She had a great weekend. Her offense was aggressive and consistent,” Vitek said. “She came up with critical kills in key situations.”
Erin Slinde also put up big numbers, accounting for 78 assists, 22 kills and five blocks. Justine Buckmister led the team with nine blocks and added 10 kills.
Brittany Morrison did her part in the back row with 70 serve receptions and 69 digs.
The Irish (19-8-1) had a chance to wrap up fourth place in the South Suburban Conference with a win last Tuesday night in their regular season finale at home against Bloomington Jefferson. They stand at 5-3 in the league after a 17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 loss to third-place Prior Lake last Tuesday.
“Overall we played pretty well even though we did not win,” Vitek said. “Prior Lake is a strong team that runs a quick offense.”
McLean slammed 21 kills in the four-set loss. Slinde led the team with 30 assists and Morrison had 16 digs and 35 serve receptions.
