Volleyball: Irish cap off 20-win season with 3-0 sweep
The Rosemount volleyball team reached a milestone with last Tuesday’s regular-season-ending 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 sweep of Bloomington Jefferson at Irish Gym.
The victory was No. 20 for the season and wrapped up a fourth-place finish behind three ranked teams – No. 3 Lakeville North, No. 2 Eagan and No. 8 Prior Lake – in the South Suburban Conference. Those achievements earned the Irish the third seed in the Section 3AAA tournament and a home game tonight against either No. 6 Apple Valley or No. 11 Jefferson.
“This was definitely a breakthrough season for our program with many positive results that we have not seen in a long time.… Most of these things have not been done at Rosemount in the past 15 years,” Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek said. “For us, much of this was achieved due to hard off-season work not only in refining our skills but in strength, agility and vertical jump training. This group of girls worked very hard to ensure they came into the season ready to go.”Teamwork and leadership were also factors in the team’s improvement, according to Vitek.“The girls realized they needed to work together…. That meant trusting each other to get the job done, listening to the coaches and working with each other to improve our game,” she said. “We also had very strong leadership from our seniors. They made sure that we focused on doing what it takes to be successful versus talking about it.”The Irish’s biggest goal is a trip to the state tournament, which will require a win in tonight’s opener and likely a matchup against No. 2-ranked Eagan on Tuesday. Top-seeded North also looms on the other side of the 3AAA bracket.“Our focus is now on bringing our best play to our section matches,” Vitek said. “It’s a big task considering we have to go through some of the top teams in the state to get there.”
