Rosemount couldn't recover after a marathon match with fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Lakeville South in Game 1 of last Thursday's contest at Irish Gym.

The Cougars held on 32-30 in the opener and went on to finish the Irish by scores of 25-13 and 25-15 as they improved to 15-1 with a South Suburban Conference sweep.

"Set 1 against Lakeville South was our best game of the season. Lakeville South is a very strong team and we battled every point with them," said Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek, whose team has now dropped four in a row. "In Game 1 we were aggressive but smart, hitting tough and waiting for the right opportunity to get our kills."

The next two games didn't go as well for the Irish.

"We got too conservative with our hitting, making it easy for Lakeville South to hammer it back at us," Vitek said. "Overall, it was a good match and hopefully we can build on the intensity and confidence of our play."

The boost in intensity and confidence was a welcome sight for the coach coming off of a 3-0 sweep at Prior Lake two days earlier. The Irish stumbled in Game 1, 25-11, before being edged 25-23 and 27-25 in Games 2 and 3.

"We just could not get into a good rhythm. We did not play bad, but not well either," Vitek said. "We would start to play well and then we would make 3-4 unforced errors in a row. In our conference you cannot win matches when you give away that many easy points."

The Irish tried to end their four-game SSC skid Tuesday night when they traveled to Bloomington Kennedy. They are back home tonight when they take on Hastings.
