Last year at the Dakota County Master Gardeners and the University of Minnesota open house the line for the free corn was long. And for good reason: the stuff was amazing.

Barbara Stendahl, from the Dakota County University of Minnesota Extension office, said the corn is a special variety that isn't available in stores. It's served minutes after being picked from the field and dipped in a crock pot of butter.

"When people get there they go right for the corn," said Stendahl.

The corn alone is worth the trip to the open house held at the Dakota County Master Gardener Education and Research Display Gardens in UMore Park, 1605 West 160th Street in Rosemount but there are lots of other things going on as well.

Adults should have no problem finding something to entertain them at the open house. A steel drum band will provide live music. There will be wine samplings of products made from University of Minnesota grapes. Classes will be offered on a variety of gardening topics, taught by master gardeners. The DNR will be on hand with all sorts of animals. And representatives from different departments at the university will have booths and demonstrations on studies and projects being conducted on the UMore property.

"I'm always amazed at the world class research that goes on out there (Umore)," said Stendahl.

Last year one of the more popular exhibits was the Chemopreventive Café. The cafe will return this year and will offer samples of foods that have been proven to prevent cancer.

"There's an emphasis on health and nutrition," said Stendahl. Stendahl said many of the classes being offered will have a health focus, such as a Cooking with Herbs class.

Additionally, Stendahl said just strolling through the gardens is a nice way to spend an evening.

"The gardens look phenomenal this year," said Stendahl.

There will be several activities for the younger crowd. Stendahl said each child will receive a passport and will go around to an assortment of activities and booths. Kids also will get to meet animals including horses, cows, raptors and more. Goldy the Gopher will be on hand as well.

The event is free and open to the public. Along with the free food there will be other foods available to purchase.
