Swimming: Irish swimmers split a pair of meets
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Coming into this season, Rosemount girls swimming and diving coach Jim Ertl knew he didn't have the experience and depth he has had in recent years.

The first two meets of the season have provided two unique opportunities as he learns how to best fill out the lineup.

Putting a strong lineup together, Rosemount beat Apple Valley, 96-90, in a meet that came down to the final event.

"I knew it was going to be a close meet with Apple Valley," Ertl said. "We're not as strong as we have been the last few years. We have a few holes in the lineup, which we were aware of. We are big on improving and being competitive at the end."

Knowing the Irish were facing a strong Eden Prairie squad the next time out, Ertl was able to try a few unique lineup combinations to help determine where some of his swimmers fit best. The result was a 112.5-71.5 loss to Eden Prairie.

"That meet, we kind of knew we were going to lose, so we had some people swim some of the events," Ertl said. "There were some good surprises. We swam well."

In the victory against Apple Valley, McKenzie Tolan won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle,

Beth Wenman added first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Lanette Griffith won the 100 backstroke.

Even though the meet would come down to the final event, the Irish pulled a point swing in the 200 freestyle relay. Rosemount went 1-2 in the event.

Wenman, Nicole Floersch, Teija Normandeau, and Claire Tolan took first place. Rebecca Eggers, Julie Normandeau, Andrea Swanson and Katie Heinsen took second.

Claire Tolan was third in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Heinsen finished third in the 200 IM. Floersch was third in the 50 freestyle.

Colleen Baker had a pair of second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Katrina Clayton won the diving competition in both meets.

Against Eden Prairie, Rosemount took first place in the 400 freestyle relay with Baker, Wenman, Claire Tolan, and McKenzie Tolan.
