Swimming: Irish 9th at state
The Rosemount girls swimming and diving team was excited to qualify for the True Team state meet, but actually competing in the meet made for a long week for the ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Irish.
Coach Tami Carlson's squad qualified by winning its first True Team section meet last Saturday, then hosted Bloomington Jefferson on Tuesday before traveling to downtown Minneapolis for the Class 2A State meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center Wednesday and Thursday. After a ninth-place finish at the 12-team meet, the Irish are ready for the longer breaks between meets that come with championship season.
"We struggled to work through a tough week with three meets in five days," Carlson said. "The girls are definitely looking forward to tapering."
The Irish hosted Eastview on Tuesday night and are now in the midst of a 15-day break before the Section 3AA championships Nov. 10-12 at Richfield Middle School.
The Irish sat in ninth place throughout the True Team state meet as they went up against the top swimmers from the top teams from around the state. Stillwater topped Edina in the battle for first place, 2,254-2,167. Wayzata finished third, followed by Minnetonka, Maple Grove, Prior Lake, Centennial, Mounds View, Rosemount (1,201), Eastview, Rochester John Marshall and Forest Lake.
Eighth-grader Megan Wenman was the only Rosemount swimmer to crack the top 10. She placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 59.56 seconds, then came back to take eighth in the 100 freestyle in 55.37.
Sophomore diver Sawyer Murray just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th with a season-best dive score of 299.15.
The team's best relay finish came in the 200 freestyle relay where Wenman, Claire Tolan, Madeline Ryan and Teija Normendeau combined on a 12th-place time of 1:44.91. Wenman, Tolan, Olivia Johnston and Elyse Griffith teamed up to place 14th in the 400 freestyle relay.
Other top-15 finishes were turned in by Johnston in the 100 breaststroke (12th, personal best 1:10.82) and Griffith in the 100 backstroke (13th, 1:03.40.)
Johnston and Beth Wenman added a 16-17 finish in the 200 individual medley. Johnson was 16th in 2:20.64 and Wenman was less than two seconds back in 17th with a 2:22.20 clocking.
Johnston, Griffith, Normandeau and Katrina Orthmann opened the meet with an 18th-place time of 1:58.18 in the 200 medley relay.
