Swimming and Diving: A very different look for Irish
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

There is certainly a different feel around the Rosemount girls swimming and diving team this season.

Longtime coach Jim Ertl is no longer roaming the pool deck for the Irish. Meanwhile, there aren't many seniors to ease the transition.

The switch is aided by new coach Tami Carlson simply making the move from assistant to head coach.

"I think the girls really miss him, but it has been a very smooth transition with (assistant coach Patti Wegner) and I keeping most of the same type of workouts and format," Carlson said.

The first-year coach takes the reins of a team that has just three seniors listed on its initial roster. Each of the four captains, has significant experience, but all are juniors.

Beth Wenman, Elyse Griffith, Sara Devitt and Madison Wessling are this season's captains for an underclassmen-laden team that opens its season Sept. 2 at Lakeville South. Rosemount's first home meet is Sept. 7.

"Our team is a very young team, looking to improve," Carlson said. "It only gets better from here. Since it is a young team, we will be learning and improving as we go, just trying to get more experience and get faster."

Carlson is dealing with a younger team, but does have several returning swimmers and divers to fill out the lineup.

Wenman is joined by returning state meet participants Teija Normandeau and Claire Tolan. Wenman was an all-conference selection.

Devitt, Megan Garin, and Megan Jelinski are back after scoring section points last season.

Claire Judeh returns to lead an experienced diving crew with Sawyer Murray, Kristina Terhaar and Carisa Brown also back after competing at the section meet last year.
