Sutherlin gets back to the basics of health
Scott Sutherlin has been in the fitness and health business a long time, and he knows what works. A confessed science geek, Sutherlin has created a fitness program based on firm exercise and nutrition science.
“If you do what I tell you, you will get results,” said Sutherlin.
Getting that point across is still hard, though. Most people, he said, don’t want to make the lifestyle changes they need to see results. Still, he’s dedicated to helping those who are.
After years of working for others, Sutherlin got frustrated with the traditional gym atmosphere. He didn’t like that health clubs provide very little education to their members and generally don’t create pathways to success including nutrition and training advice.
“I got frustrated with all that. This is how I believe it should be done,” said Sutherlin, referring to his new business.
Scott Sutherlin Fitness has taken over the former Northwest Martial Arts location on Dodd Blvd. At first glance, the fitness center doesn’t look like most. Tires line one wall, homemade medicine balls line another and Bulgarian bags lie in a pile. Sutherlin says the less-traditional equipment offers everything needed for a good workout.
Coming soon will be a pull-up stand. Sutherlin said the apparatus will accommodate up to 24 people at a time. He said it will be one of the largest in the country.
Sutherlin’s approach to goal attainment is approaching fitness and weight loss from multiple directions including cardiovascular training, weight training, and nutritional education. Additionally, Sutherlin said he aims to create an environment that supports people’s goals.
“You can do anything with support and accountability,” said Sutherlin.
Nutrition is a key component to Sutherlin’s program. A certified sports nutritionist, Sutherlin said diet is 80 percent of any weight-loss program. Sutherlin plans to host monthly nutritional seminars with experts in the field.
“The only thing you can control is what you put into your mouth,” said Sutherlin.
Overall, Sutherlin believes that to be successful workouts need to vary, be intense and fun. He’s creating that atmosphere and he hopes to reach out to more people going forward.
“If you’re looking for results and knowledge, come here,” said Sutherlin.
There will be a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Scott Sutherlin Fitness at 4 p.m. Oct. 28.
