Maintenance workers at Dakota County Technical College spent the summer transforming the Student Life center, and many are thankful for their efforts.

Crews spruced up the Student Life Center by adding office space for various groups and by adding a conference room that student organizations will be able to use for their meetings.

The center was formerly a wide open space, but student life director Nicole Meulemans it was transformed to be more usable to staff and students. The Veterans Resource Center now has its own office space, as do all the coaches and the student Senate.

"This way we better utilize the space we have," said Meulemans.

Meulemans said the project was done so the school could better support its student groups. She said students who engage in clubs and organizations have higher retention rates, so DCTC really wants to make an effort to support various groups.

"It really helps with our retention efforts," said Meulemans.

The DCTC Student Life program encourages student growth and development through a variety of clubs, organizations and activities funded through student activity fees.

The project, which was done in house, started in June and finished last week. Meulemans said there are a few odds and ends that need to be completed but for the most part the project is done.

Assistant director of student life Kari Peterson said the center hasn't gotten a lot of use yet but she anticipates that will change as more people learn the space is available.

"Students are still figuring out we're here and they can use it," she said. "It's a much more comfy space and I think students will like it."
