Softball: RHS ends regular season with 2-1 loss
The regular season ended in fitting fashion for the Rosemount softball team. The Irish lost a close 2-1 game to Chaska, and RHS coach Jim Matheson was left wondering how his team had managed to lose another close one.
Chaska scored both its runs on a throwing error in the second inning.
Rosemount mounted an attack of its own, but had a runner tagged out at home and then the team couldn't get the big hit when it needed it most.
"It was another one of those games we could have, should have won if we would have just made one less mistake," Matheson said.
Rosemount finished the season with an 8-6 mark in the Lake Conference and a 12-7 overall record.
Matheson counted four ballgames that could have easily gone the other way during Lake Conference play. Had Rosemount won those four games, the team would have been conference champions again. Instead, the team settled for a fifth-place tie.
There were two games Rosemount lost in the bottom of the seventh.
There was one game where pitcher Angela Phillips threw a no-hitter through 11 innings, and the team lost.
Then, there was last week's game against Chaska.
Rosemount got its run on a walk by Lauren Foley and a triple by Tanya Kettinger.
Rosemount was set to begin play in the section tournament on Wednesday night in Austin, but rain forced the postponement of the game.
"We drove all the way down there in the rain," Matheson said. "I kept calling, and they said, 'We're playing. It's not raining here.'
"We pulled in the parking lot, and the skies opened up. It came down pretty good. We stood around for an hour, then came back."
The games that were under way will be completed Friday at 5 p.m.
Rosemount will play at 7 p.m.
