Softball: Irish advance in 3AAA
The Rosemount softball team got some timely hits and another solid effort from pitcher Gabby Sprang in the opening round of the Section 3AAA tournament.
Sprang scattered six hits, walked none and struck out eight Apple Valley hitters in a 4-0 victory over the Eagles last Wednesday at The Cove.
The Irish resumed tournament play Tuesday afternoon in Bloomington against a ninth-ranked Eastview team they defeated 4-1 during the South Suburban Conference season. The Lightning went on to post a record of 12-4 and finish third in the league.
The Irish, meanwhile, have won five of their last seven, with all five wins coming via shutout.
"The players are relaxed and confident. The girls have played several good games, including our game against Apple Valley," Rosemount coach Tiffany Rose said. "We are focusing on the positive things we have done as we head into the rest of the section tournament."
It took four innings for the Irish bats to get going against Apple Valley. It was still scoreless when Melissa Seldon reached with a one-out single. After a Kia Henk sacrifice bunt, Madi Van Sickle came through with a line drive single to make it 1-0.
An inning later, pinch hitter Maddy Moran doubled and pinch runner Nina Kayfes scored on a wild pitch. A groundout by Hannah Esselman scored Anna Hinderaker to make it 3-0.
Seldon added an insurance run in the sixth when she led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Seldon leads the team with a .463 average and 10 RBI. Hinderaker is second on the team with a .429 average and Esselman is hitting at a .383 clip.
Sprang improved her record to 6-5 and lowered her ERA to 1.56. She has 76 strikeouts and 21 walks and has held opponents to a .191 average.
