The third-seeded Irish (14-7) opened play in Richfield by rallying for a 2-1 victory over No. 6 seed Eagan last Wednesday. They returned to Richfield Friday and were held to just two hits in a 2-0 shutout loss to fourth-ranked Bloomington Jefferson.

The Jaguars advanced to face second-ranked Lakeville North in the winner’s bracket final on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Irish began what they were hoping would be a long run through the consolation bracket with a game against No. 5 seed Park of Cottage Grove. Results from the rest of the tournament will appear in next week’s Independent Town Pages.

The Irish were down to their final strike before coming back to shock Eagan last Wednesday. Trailing by a run with three outs to go, Madi Van Sickle started the seventh with a single to center. After an infield single by Karly Kirchgatter and a pair of outs, Shannon Dawson worked the count to 2-and-2 before crushing a two-run, walk-off double off the left field wall. It was Dawson’s second-ever varsity start.

The clutch hit made a winner of Gabby Sprang, who held Eagan to one run on five hits while striking out eight.

Sprang scattered nine hits and fanned six Friday against Jefferson, but the Jaguars plated two runs in the first and made it stand in a 2-0 final.

Anna Hinderaker and Nina Kayfes each supplied singles for the Irish.
