SKB plans landfill expansion in Rosemount
SKB Environmental takes a lot of pride in the work they've done and in their reputation. As such, they are hoping people don't mind if they are around a few more years.
The company hosted an open house May 28 at Dakota County Technical College, to inform residents and local officials about a proposal to expand its Rosemount industrial waste facility. While the company was not required to host the open house, division landfill manager John Domke said he felt like it was important to let people know the company's intentions.
The company has proposed an 8 million cubic yard expansion that will expand the life of the Rosemount facility a number of years. Currently, the facility processes about a million cubic yards of waste a year.
The proposed expansion is confined to the existing land parcel and does not extend the company's property. Domke said the expansion will move out 15 acres into land that currently holds a wetland and raise the elevation of the landfill 50 feet. Domke said all waste will be either construction and demolition debris or industrial solid waste.
The wetland will need to be replaced and the company has already started working with the city to find a suitable location. Domke said the current wetland is 9.6 acres and the company will replace it at a 2:1 ratio, meaning there will be a net gain to the city.
SKB has completed wetland mitigation and replacement projects in Rosemount before, including projects at Schwartz Pond Park and the Ames Soccer Complex at Dakota County Technical College.
At the meeting, Domke said SKB hopes to have things done by fall. While he admitted it's an aggressive timetable, Domke said he believes it can be accomplished. SKB has already submitted applications for the expansion to the city of Rosemount, Dakota County and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Domke said he hopes the company's reputation and record will mean neighbors and local government agencies will support the company's expansion plans.
"We are very proud of our operating record. We have a philosophy that we want to be an asset to the community," said Domke.
