Future City tests students' abilities in engineering, science and math. Teams create a 3D model of an imagined city using the computer game Sim City, then research topics such as alternative energy and infrastructure and write a paper about their city. Students are asked to look 150 years into the future.

Rosemount Middle School's Team Superior City won the infrastructure award at a Jan. 14 competition at the University of Minnesota.

"It was just how they laid out their city plan and what their solutions were for things like garbage and plumbing," said Teri Hitchcock, who is in her first year as advisor for the Future Cities team.

RMS had about a dozen kids in three teams compete in Future Cities this year.
