RHS students nominated for ExCEL awards
Rosemount High School has nominated Rachel Schow and Lucas Dahl, and Farmington High School has nominated Justin Hyytinen and Natalie Pellin, for the ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) Award.
Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, ExCEL is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors. Students who are active in fine arts and/or athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in their community are eligible for the award.
Schow is the daughter of Jean and Shawn Schow. She is on the A honor roll and maintains a GPA of 3.912. She has earned an academic letter and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Schow is a three-time letter winner in track and field and is a team captain. She has received MVP, Best of the Spring and Athlete of the Week honors. She has been named all-conference and all-state. She was a state champion in 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and is a school, conference and section record holder in both events.
Schow is also a two-time letter winner in gymnastics and is a team captain. She won all-conference honorable mention in the floor exercise and all-state honorable mention in the floor exercise and balance beam.
She is also a two-time letter winner in cross country and earned the Newcomer of the Year Award.
Schow also participates in the marching band and will participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade. She is also involved in the pep band. She volunteers at her church as a vacation bible school leader and participates in youth group and mission trips. She is a Silver/Gold Award winner and is a 12-year member of Girls Scouts and the Top Cookie Seller. She has also volunteered numerous hours with the food shelf, Care Package for the Troops and helped coach youth in various sports.
Dahl is the son of Jon and Sarah Dahl. He is on the A honor roll and has a GPA of 3.960. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Student Ambassador and Respect Retreat Leader. He was also nominated by the staff to be a Triple Impact Competitor.
Dahl is a three-year letter winner in football and has been an honorary captain and three-time Player of the Week. He has participated in the state tournament twice and was a member of the team that was the South Suburban champion, section champion and state tournament runner-up. He also participated in basketball during his freshman year.
Dahl is a letter winner in baseball and will be the captain of the team this spring. He was named all-conference last season.
Dahl is a member of band and participated in the ensemble contest as a soloist and with a group. He has volunteered his time as a coach for RAAA youth football. He has also helped with youth baseball clinics and has been a baseball instructor and a volunteer baseball coach.
Dahl has been worked with students with disabilities and has also been a tutor in math and science.
Pellin has been a member of the fall community education dance team as well as the winter varsity dance squad. She has also served as a statistician for the football team and manager and announcer for the softball team.
In the area of fine arts, she has experience in public speaking and video production and is a member of the Nordstrom Fashion Board.
Pellin is an A honor roll student who currently ranks second in her class of 466 students. She is the class vice-president and active in youth government, Youth Development, the National Honor Society, Link Crew, and the yearbook staff.
Pellin is also serves as a student representative on the Farmington School Board and is a member of both the We Day and homecoming committees.
Pellin has also been involved in volunteer projects such as Secret Holiday Shopper, Feed My Starving Children, Soles for Shoes Drive, the Special Olympic Polar Plunge and the city of Farmington Toys for Town.
Hyytinen is a cross country and track state meet participant who has won Academic All-State honors each of the last two years. He has also been active in fine arts activities such as ceramics and Photoshop.
An A honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society, Hyytinen has also been an active participant in mock trial, Tiger Leadership Club. math and Spanish tutoring, Sober Squad, Link Crew, Youth Development, the We Day Committee and the Captain's Council.
Hyytinen has also donated time as a tutor, youth track coach and track meet volunteer, a running club leader and a volunteer for Feed My Starving Children.
An independent panel of judges from across the state will select the ExCel Award winners in January. They will be recognized on KSTC-TV during the telecasts of the 2014 winter state tournaments.
