Residents can follow food program through to the end
In March more than 1,000 Rosemount residents gathered to help feed the hungry through the One Rosemount Feeding Families efforts. As part of the effort families packed 285,120 meals for Haitian refugees living in the Dominican Republic.
The One Rosemount committee partnered with ImpactLives, a non-profit, to hold the event. In late July, the organization will travel to the Dominican Republic to deliver food and do other humanitarian work and they are inviting Rosemount residents to come with them.
Chief learning officer Cathy Bergland said the organization will take a group on a trip called an ImpactQuest July 29 to Aug. 4. Participants will travel to the Dominican Republic to help people in an area called Hato Mayor. The group will serve refugees and homeless people in Batay, an old sugar field that's been turned into a refugee camp.
Impact Lives hosts several ImpactQuests a year. Bergland said the trips are a mix of leadership training and humanitarian aid work. The humanitarian activities include building homes, food distribution, providing educational and recreational activities for kids and more.
Most importantly, Bergland said, the trips focus on building relationships.
"People come home with a different perspective," said Bergland.
Bergland said Impact Lives delivers aid in a responsible way. While providing food and shelter fills immediate needs, Bergland said they also teach people to be independent and to become self-sustaining.
The ImpactQuest is open to anyone. So far seven people from Rosemount have committed to the trip. Bergland said they need at least 15 to make the trip a go. She hopes some of the people who volunteered with the One Rosemount Feeding Families campaign will consider it.
The program is open to individuals 15 and older. Kids younger than 15 can go if they are accompanied by a parent. Participants are responsible for their own airfare. The trip cost is $1,350 which will include room and board, transportation in country and materials.
