Every resident in Rosemount has felt the impacts of cancer. The disease attacks young, old, successful, poor, women and men.

While cancer continues to take lives, through continued research, strides are being made towards treatments and hopefully someday a cure. The American Cancer Society supports that research through the generosity of people around the country that participate in community Relay for Life events.

For years, Rosemount has held an annual Relay for Life event and chair Stacy Lufkin said the money raised helps continue the fight against the disease that has impacted the lives of so many Rosemount residents.

“It’s only through research that we’re going to find a cure and new treatments,” said Lufkin.

This year’s Rosemount Relay for Life will start at 6 p.m. June 27 and end at 6 a.m. June 28. The relay will be held at Rosemount High School’s Irish Stadium. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Irish Dome.

This year’s event will have the traditional features of Relay for Life. The event will begin with an opening ceremony and the survivors’ lap. There will be a reception for survivors after the lap.

At sunset a luminaria ceremony will honor those who have died. Walkers will then trek through the night and finish after the sun has risen.

In the past, the event has featured an honorary cancer survivor as a keynote speaker. Lufkin said the committee has struggled to find someone willing to speak this year. She said if anyone would like to speak about their battle with cancer, they should contact her.

Currently, 14 teams are registered to walk. Lufkin said she’s hopeful a few more will register in the coming weeks. She invited members of the community to come out and enjoy an inspirational evening.

Registration is $10 per walker. There is no fundraising minimum but Lufkin said they encourage participants to raise at least $100. However, she said people should participate regardless of the amount of money they raise.

“That’s the nice thing about this event, it lets people give as they can, and be part of a fun and uplifting event,” said Lufkin.
