The Bookawocky Summer Reading Experience gives library visitors the opportunity to win prizes while indulging in whatever reading they want.

“Summertime is a great time for kids to read because they can read whatever they want,” said Kathy Kleckner, the Robert Trail Children’s Librarian.

Pragmatically, Dakota County Librarian Julia Carlis said, it is important kids continue to read throughout the summer months so they don’t lose the skills they acquired during the school year. She said reading helps kids stay engaged and can even help them learn new things.

Kids, birth to fifth grade, will receive a Bookawocky game board when they sign up. The game board includes a variety of reading-based activities for kids to do. Kleckner said the activities are fun and a great way to get kids to understand the joy of reading.

The kids will receive prizes for reading and completing the activities. The prizes include a library bookmark, a mood pencil, a free book and a lightweight backpack.

For participating kids will also be eligible to win prizes including Minnesota State Fair tickets and Minnesota Twins tickets. The grand prize will be a family membership to a zoo or museum.

Teens can also participate. Carlis said to win prizes teens can submit book reviews. Prizes for teens will include books, gift cards and, as the grand prize, a Galaxy tablet. Each branch will give out a tablet.

Additionally, teens who register will get a free pass to Cascade Bay Teen Takeover from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. before June 19.

The Robert Trail Library, with the help of the Friends of the Robert Trail Library, will host a summer reading program kick-off party from 2 to 3:30 p.m. June 13 in the meeting room. The kick-off offers kids an opportunity to sign up for the program. Additionally, the event will include games, ice cream and the chance to make a personalized bookmark.

In addition to the summer reading program, the Robert Trail Library and others in the Dakota County Library system will hold a number of special events including concerts, storytimes, workshops and more.
