New club rolls friends together

Alena Rakita started training for triathlons last year. After moving from New Jersey to Rosemount, she’s looking for some women to train with her.

Alena Rakita would like to make new friends from the saddle of a bicycle, or maybe during a jog on one of Rosemount’s trails.

Ratika followed a job from New Jersey to Minnesota last June, and it left the novice triathlete without any training partners. She’s trying to change that this year with the formation of the Rosemount Women’s Triathlon Club. The idea, she said, is to get women in the Rosemount area together for fun, fitness and maybe a little healthy competition.

“It’s all about encouragement,” Rakita said. “I am doing the YWCA women’s triathlon in August … but I don’t have anyone else to do it with."

“It will be cool if we can all connect and just create a community of athletes.”

As of Tuesday morning, the Facebook-based group had 30 fans. Rakita would like to see that number grow. She’d like people to use the page as a way to connect for training and social events.

One of the club’s early members is an accomplished Ironman triathlete, but Rakita wants to welcome members of all ability levels. Members with more experience can help guide newcomers, she said.

Rakita herself couldn’t even swim in January of 2013.

“It’s any size, age, shape, any athlete of any kind,” Rakita said. “You don’t have to be a triathlete. If you cycle, I cycle every Saturday and Sunday…. If people are looking for a running buddy, it would be nice to find other people who run.”

Eventually, Rakita would like to turn the club into a nonprofit that uses its workouts and competitions as a way to support area charities.
