"I am humbled. The Red Bulls have a long and proud history and I couldn't be more honored to lead the fine men and women of this organization," said Elicerio in a press release.

Elicerio has been a member of the Minnesota National Guard since 1980. He has served in several senior staff positions and commanded troop units in Bosnia and Iraq.

According to the Minnesota National Guard web site Elicerio has served in a multitude of senior staff positions and commanded troop units at the company, battalion and brigade levels. He served as the Chief of Joint Military Affairs during the Minnesota National Guard's peacekeeping mission to Bosnia in 2003. In 2005, he commanded the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Division. That unit was instrumental during the troop surge and served a total of 16 months in Iraq after being extended.

Most recently, Elicerio served as the Deputy Commander for the 34th Infantry Division and completed his second tour to Iraq. During that deployment the Red Bulls commanded U.S. military forces throughout nine of Iraq's 18 provinces. It was the first time since World War II the division had established its headquarters in a combat zone.

"I am confident in Elicerio's abilities to serve as the commanding general for the 34th Infantry Division. He's provided insightful leadership throughout his tenure in the Minnesota National Guard and I look forward to watching this organization continue to lead the way." said Maj. Gen. Larry Shellito, the outgoing Minnesota Army National Guard Adjutant General.

Elicerio will assume his duties from Nash at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at a ceremony held at the Rosemount National Guard Armory.
