Moving towards a more healthful lifestyle
Gabrielle Feivor wants to get healthier. She's been working out at the gym pretty regularly but when her friend Kyann Graham mentioned she was hosting a free weekly Fit Club at Community of Hope Church, Feivor decided to give it ago.
For the last three weeks a group of women have busted their humps to the Beachbody video Body Gospel at the church. The dvds are tough, but that doesn't seem to bother any of the women.
"It's really a good workout and it fun to do," said Feivor.
Beachbody is an independent company that creates workout dvds. In addition to Body Gospel the company developed the popular P90X and Insanity programs as well. Body Gospel is a faith-based workout program that gets the heart pumping with a emphasis on praising Jesus.
Graham and her husband, Jim, are Beachbody coaches. The couple went through the P90X program a while back and really enjoyed it. They eventually decided to start a home business through the program.
While she is a coach, Graham said she doesn't want to use the Fit Club to sell the product. She's more interested in helping people get healthier.
"I just want people to come and get exercise," said Graham.
During the hour-long classes Graham puts in one of the dvds and the group follows along. So far the group has just done the Body Gospel, but Graham said they will move on to the other programs. Including P90X.
In addition to the workout Graham likes to offer a little education. Each week she brings a handout on nutrition or fitness for group members to take home with them. Many of the handouts contain healthful recipes.
Graham said if she can help one person get healthier by hosting Fit Club then she will feel like it was worth it.
"(I) want to help end the trend of obesity," said Graham.
This past week Graham decided to raise the stakes in aspiring for good health. She asked the group to think about a challenge they could do as a group, such as a weight loss goal or a way to be held accountable for working out or good eating habits during the week.
She hopes to start the challenge at the next Fit Club Meeting.
For the first sessions the group met Saturday mornings. There seemed to be a lot of conflicts so Graham has decided to change to Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. That will start June 14 in the children's ministry room at Community of Hope Church, 14401 Biscayne Ave. W.
The Fit Club is open to anyone, men or women, who wants a good workout. For more information check out Aspire4Fitness on Facebook.
