For the love of dance
When the members of Rosemount High School's Modern Dance Company take the stage May 27 at the RHS Performing Arts Center they'll have a couple of goals in mind. One, they want to put on a performance that clues in an audience perhaps unfamiliar with the intricacies of modern dance and explain what draws them to it. And two, they want to raise a bunch of money for charity.
For the past several years the Modern Dance Company, a group of advanced dance students at RHS, have used their annual concert as a fund raiser. This year, money raised will go to Young Dance -- Transforming Lives Through Movement. The 12-year-old organization encourages youth in the community to "build body, mind and spirit through the creative art of dance."
It is perhaps appropriate, then, that the theme of this year's Modern Dance Company show is Modern Dance Revealed. Dance teacher Christina Morris said the pieces in the show, many of which are choreographed by the students, will serve as a kind of history lesson on modern dance and work to explain what it is about an art form that can seem abstract that the dancers find so alluring.
Modern Dance Revealed will take the stage at 7 p.m. May 27.
Modern Dance Company members are Erin Armstrong, Kaitlyn Cohan, Maryssa Collins, Shelby Erickson, Josie Guarneros, Michaela Kaye, Lacy Knutson, Niki Mussell, Vince Noble, Alex Pham, Katie Retterath, Savannah Ricard, Kyle Weiler and Emma Zschunke.
