Lottery will determine final spot on council ballot
Incumbent Mark DeBettignies led the pack for the municipal primary Tuesday night. Shaun Nelson and Kerry Hiben will join him on the ballot but the fourth candidate to fill out the field will not be determined until Friday.
With all precincts reporting, the Minnesota Secretary of State website shows Alba Nowlin and Jamal Abdulahi in a tie with 252 votes a piece. All results are unofficial results until approved by the city council. The Rosemount City Council is scheduled to meet Friday to canvass results. At that time, the council will conduct a lottery to figure out whether Nowlin or Abdulahi will advance.
Council members will meet at 7:30 a.m. Friday to canvass the results. They will conduct the lottery at that time. After the lottery is complete either candidate will have five days to request a recount.
The purpose of the municipal primary is to narrow the field of candidates to four. In November, voters will select two to represent Rosemount on the city council.
City clerk Clarissa Hadler said most of the polling locations reported low turnouts, which is typical for a non-presidential primary. On Tuesday, 1866 Rosemount residents turned out to the polls for the primary.
