Levine and Pokriefka continue at state wrestling meet

Rosemount's Phil Levine and Frank Pokriefka are still alive in the state wrestling meet this week at the Xcel Energy Center.

Levine, a senior 103-pounder, won his Thursday match against Prior Lake's Brady Johnshoy in a 9-0 decision. Levine advances to today's semifinals against Sam Brancale from Eden Prairie. Brancale is 29-3 this season. The two will meet up on mat No. 6 in match No. 226, set for this afternoon.

On the other side of the bracket, St. Cloud Apollo's Mitch Bengston will face Jesse Loges from Minneapolis South. Bengston entered the tournament ranked No. 1 and is 42-1 this season. Loges is 36-4 and ranked No. 6.

Levine is now 40-0 and started the tournament ranked No. 2 in the weight class. He has already beaten the No. 4 and No. 8 ranked wrestlers in the tournament.

Pokriefka, a senior heavyweight, lost his second-round match 7-4 to Jake Kettler from Anoka. Kettler entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in the heavyweight class and in 26-1.

Pokriefka then recovered to beat Tartan's Jeremy Strain 3-1 in the first round of the wrestle-backs. Today, Pokriefka faces Pen Maclin from Rochester John Marshall on mat No. 8 in match No. 280 as he tries to go through the wrestle-backs and is two rounds away from a possible third-place finish.

Pokriefka is 31-9 this season. Maclin is 34-7 and is ranked No. 7.
