After he finished his PhD, Greg Twaites swore he would never take a class again. A few months later, he called the MacPhail Center for Music, looking for a class.

During the night he had available there was a jazz class, so he signed up. Turns out the failed promise to himself, led to a love affair.

Now Twaites wants to share his love of jazz with the community. A member of the Rosemount Area Arts Council, Twaites has taken on the role of jazz program coordinator and has planned a concert to help spread the joy.

Jazz at the Steeple Center will feature the Paul Renz Quartet and special guest Broadway flutist Anders Bostrom. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. May 18 at 14375 S. Robert Tr.

Renz is a reknowned jazz guitarist. Both men are both nationally recognized artists. The two men attended the Berklee College of Music in the 80s and perform together often.

Twaites said Renz is a great musician who has produced a number of CDs and LPs over his career. Renz's most current work is In My Own Hands. He also teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music and the West Bank School of Music in Minneapolis. Twaites met Renz through the MacPhail Center for Music.

The concert came up as a spur of the moment event, but Twaites hopes it will turn into something more. Going forward, Twaites said the arts council hopes to host a variety of jazz concerts that will include both professional and student musicians.

There is a small but vibrant jazz scene in the south metro and Twaites said he would like to see it grow. While many have preconceived notions of jazz, Twaites said many would be surprised that it's much more than people think.

"Jazz can be a lot of things," said Twaites.

Twaites is doing his part to change minds and draw people to the music. He hopes members of the community will come out.

Tickets for Jazz at the Steeple Center are $15 for adults and $10 for students. For more information visit the Rosemount Area Arts Council website at rosemountarts.com.
